  1. Actually, the flame is a byproduct, not the source of the light. Most searchlights use a carbon arc lamp, where you have two carbon rods and a big fat electric spark crossing from one to the other. This causes the tips of the rods to heat up and give off incandescent light. The flame is produced by the carbon rods burning up slowly.

  2. The technology may be old, but the utility derived is the important thing. Admittedly, it’s quaint and old-fashioned but I would find it fascinating, antiques I believe fuel nostalgia. I like re-visiting my youth.
