Al-Deir: The Rose Monastery of Petra
The Rose City of Petra dates back to the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt. The city remained secret until 1812 upon discovery by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burchhardt. Petra flourished as a caravan trade route until 363 BC when the city was destroyed by an earthquake. The Rose City is a tourist attraction because of T.E. Lawrence or Lawrence of Arabia but many of the ancient structure are threatened by erosion and floods.
