Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Watch your thoughts. They become words. Watch your words. They become deeds. Watch your deeds. They become habits. Watch your habits. They become character. Character is everything."

  1. From the movie Wall Street…

    “A man looks in the abyss, there is nothing staring back at him. At that moment he discovers his character. That keeps the man out of the abyss.”

  2. oy, i love emerson. and lemme add this: we shape thoughts, opinions, habits in a kind of feedback loop with our media. when the organs of the press are amalgamated, inaccessible, monopolistic, or biased then our thoughts, words, deeds, and even our morality can get distorted. the only way to resist this closing is with free and open media. thank heavens for word press.

  3. Konfuzius, the chinese philisopher said something like:
    You ‘ve won real character, when you’re able to stay above your character.

    So we’ve three stages in life:
    ppl without character
    ppl who gained a character
    and at least ppl who left their character, but are always able to let themselves fall into one. 🙂

    I really appreciate his thought, because it changes so many things in life and let you smile forever.

  5. The “Watch your thoughts..” quote is widely attributed to Frank Outlaw, not Emerson. When looking it up, it’s actually on a quote site directly under some Emerson quotes. Perhaps that is where the mix up occured. Anyone have any other ideas on verifying the author?

  6. I actually need to confirm the author of the “Watch your Thoughts…” quote, and locate Frank Outlaw, if in fact, he is the author and is still alive. Does anyone know his whereabouts?

  7. And yet sadly no one has attributed this to its true origin…

    The thought manifests as the word;
    The word manifests as the deed;
    The deed develops into habit;
    And habit hardens into character;
    So watch the thought and its ways with care,
    And let is spring from love
    Born out of concern for all beings…

    As the shadow follows the body,
    As we think, so we become.

    I found this site/blog after seeing a quote attributed to Frank Outlaw and now Emerson… It just makes you think.

  9. Reference please. There are already too many junk quotations about Buddha, Gandhi and other great thinkers, that are simply not their own.
